Mangosteen Fruit - The Queen of the Fruits is a Dog

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Author: F Fleming B.Sc.Pharm, M.H

Have you noticed lately when you browse a health ezine that there is some unfamiliar exotic food being featured as the “New Super Food”? We are constantly being deluged with new information and assertions. From all kinds of non-native berries to unheard of beverages how do we know what products have some good medicinal qualities?

I want to feature a fruit that I’ve recently been introduced to known as Mangosteen. Mangosteen fruit has been consumed since the beginning of the human race in the eastern world while it has only recently been made known in the western world. Introduction of Mangosteen fruit to our western world brought with it the reputation known as “Queen of Fruits”

Mangosteen fruit, also known as Xango, originated in Southern Asia. This location is where Mangosteen fruit is usually grown. It grows on Asian tropical evergreen trees where the climate is relatively warm, does not withstand very cold temperatures and grows at a very slow pace. When these trees are about ten years old they start to produce small purplish fruits which have no relation to the Mango. In Asia, Mangosteen fruit is noted as the “Queen of Fruits” on account of its delicate taste and aroma

The “Claim to Fame” for Mangosteen fruit originates as a  ample source of xanthones. These are phenolic compounds containing potent antioxidant properties. Numerous people don’t realize that most of the xanthones are located in the rind and outer shell, not in the fruit itself. Slick selling has promoted this exotic fruit for sale in the form of juices at outrages prices. On the internet I came across Mangosteen juice for sale at $35.00 for a 750ml bottle. In a health food store I found 1 liter of Mangosteen juice selling at $50.00. Are these prices warranted?

How to Treat Yeast Infections With Your Diet

Monday, December 1st, 2008

There are a number of possible causes of yeast infection. One of the main reasons people get a yeast infection is due to taking oral contraceptive pills, using oral steroids, due to have your period, having diabetes, use of applications like soap, douche, hygiene products, and wearing tight, damp, and/or warm clothing. If you have an infection the good news is that there are many different treatments that can be tried. However any treatment you try should also be combined with the right type of diet.  If you have a yeast infection you really want to deal with it.

When treating a yeast infection using a diet, then we should really be refering to it as a detox. The reason a yeast infection occurs is because of a microorganism, that has grown too much in your body, if you want the scientific name then it’s really called Candida albican.  There are many ways you can detox your body.

One of the basic necessities in diet programs is drinking adequate amounts of water. When detoxing your body it’s very difficult to do this without the help of water. This is because the water helps get rid of toxins that are trapped in your body. It has been also suggested that fresh fruit juices and even tea be added to the liquid intake. Generally speaking it’s advised that you have an intake of eight glasses of water every day.

Food Guide Pyramid

If you are concerned with child health and nutrition, one of the first steps you are going to have to take is to learn about the food pyramid. In order to provide them with the nutrition they need to thrive, it's essential to understand the food pyramid.

Designed by the US Department of Agriculture, the food guide pyramid was created in order to promote healthy nutrition in children over the age of six years. The five major food groups are all required for good health and the main emphasis of the pyramid is on these five groups.

For proper child health and nutrition you are going to want to make sure that they are eating foods from all of these different food groups. For instance, although the pyramid says that you should eat 2-3 servings of meat a day this does not mean that you need to eat meat three different times in one day.

Power Foods To Help Prevent Disease

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Did you know that there are over thirty “power foods” that hold the key to preventing disease, slowing the aging process and maximizing your body’s natural efficiency? Of course, there is no miraculous cure-all and scientists are still very much learning how the body works. But why not add some foodstuff to your diet that health experts can agree upon? Whether you want to boost your heart health or reduce cholesterol levels, the answer may be more delicious than you had thought!

For snackers, texture is a big thing. You love the crunch of a potato chip or the way a chocolate chip cookie just sort of melts in your mouth. The good news is that one of the power foods on our list has just the crunch you need to feel satisfied: almonds! Two ounces or 48 of these tasty nuts will give you 50% of your daily magnesium, which ensures heart health, as well as providing vitamin E, fiber and monosaturated fat, which is the good kind. One study last year found that participants who ate 2.5 ounces of almonds per day lowered their cholesterol significantly after just one month! Other studies suggest a link between almonds and reducing the risk of colon cancer.

For carnivores, a salmon, if cooked properly, can sometimes have that steak texture you crave in your dinner foods. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon make it one of the all-around best fish to eat. According to the Pharmacological Research journal, adding 200 mg of DHA daily, which is one of the fatty acids in salmon, will decrease your risk of heart attack by 50%. DHA also helps keep the brain and memory in its best shape, so you needn’t worry about Alzheimers or Dementia if you take this into consideration and adjust your diet appropriately.

Perhaps you find that warm foods and drinks make you feel naturally happier. Maybe you’re a reformed coffee junkie. Instead, why not try a cup of tea? Chai tea is a delicious blend of vanilla, cinnamon and comforting spices. Generally black and green teas are the most doctor-recommended for fighting breast, lung and digestive cancers and heart disease. Additionally, a hot cocoa can provide you with antioxidant flavonoids, which fight heart disease and cancer, will reduce toxins in the blood and improve cholesterol ratios.

The Arabs were the first to find Alfalfa and they named it “the father of all foods.” There are many nutrients to be had in the leaves, including potassium, calcium, magnesium, and carotene.

Not only does it help as a diuretic it’s also great as a laxative. It also works well for urinary tract infections, and kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders. The latest and greatest discovery of Alfalfa is the benefits that it may offer for lowering cholesterol because there are certain agents in Alfalfa that stick to cholesterol which keeps it from remaining in the blood stream.

The Good, Bad and Ugly of Antibiotics

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

We all have to admit to the many advances in our health care we can be thankful for today. Before the 1900’s the top related causes of death were due largely to contaminated food and water as well as an insufficient housing and sewage disposal system. Once we began to understand more about the invisible world full of bacteria, things like indoor plumbing and the sterilization of medical instruments were established. As time has passed, we have become more and more conscience about our personal hygiene. This has resulted in a wonderful decrease in infectious diseases.

Yet, while there has been a significant decrease in deaths due to infectious diseases, starting with the introduction of penicillin in the 1940’s, new issues within the disease related causes of death cropped up. The causes of death went from infectious diseases to chronic disease conditions. People are not dying from poor hygiene, they are dying from the decrease and elimination of something else.

And this is where our discussion turns to the dark side of antibiotics. The undeniable truth of this problem is – the destruction of bad bacteria by means of antibiotics also kills our amazing probiotic bacteria friends.
